ब्लॉग सारांश
  • DDP vs DAP shipping comes down to one question: who clears customs and pays import duties and taxes at the destination.
  • Under DAP, the seller delivers to the buyer's country and the buyer pays duties and taxes on arrival. Under DDP, the seller pays them upfront.
  • For eCommerce orders, DDP usually gives a smoother buyer experience and fewer refused parcels, while DAP keeps your shipping price lower.
  • Rules differ by country. The USA, UK and Canada each treat low-value parcels differently, so check destination rules and carrier support first.
  • Shiprocket X offers duty-paid shipping on selected lanes, so confirm which destinations and services support DDP before you book.

A customer in Toronto orders a ₹4,000 kurta set from your website. The parcel reaches Canada on time, but the courier asks them to pay duty, sales tax and a brokerage fee before handing it over. They refuse the delivery, ask for a refund, and you pay for the return.

That one moment is the heart of the DDP vs DAP shipping decision. Both terms get your goods to the buyer's country. The difference is who deals with customs, and who pays the import bill, once the parcel lands.

This guide explains Delivered Duty Paid and Delivered at Place in plain language. You'll see the key DDP vs DAP differences, a side-by-side comparison table, and practical examples for an Indian brand selling to the USA, UK and Canada.

What Are DDP and DAP?

DDP and DAP are two of the 11 Incoterms rules published by the इंटरनेशनल चैंबर ऑफ कॉमर्स (आईसीसी). The current edition is Incoterms 2020. These rules set out who pays for transport, who carries the risk, and who handles customs at each stage of an international shipment.

Both DDP and DAP belong to the "D" group. In D terms, the seller is responsible for getting the goods all the way to the destination country. That makes them the two terms closest to how most cross-border eCommerce delivery works.

If you want the full picture of all 11 rules, our handbook on शिपिंग इनकोटर्म्स इनमें से प्रत्येक को कवर करता है।

What Is Delivered at Place (DAP)?

Under Delivered at Place, the seller arranges and pays for transport to a named place in the buyer's country. That place can be the buyer's door, a warehouse or a terminal.

The seller handles export clearance in India. The buyer handles import clearance and pays all import duties, taxes and customs fees. Risk passes to the buyer when the goods arrive at the named place, ready to unload.

In parcel shipping, DAP is often called "duties unpaid" or "receiver pays". Our guide to डीएपी शिपिंग goes deeper into how the term works in practice.

डिलीवर्ड ड्यूटी पेड (डीडीपी) क्या है?

Under Delivered Duty Paid, the seller does everything DAP requires and also clears the goods through import customs. The seller pays the import duties, VAT or GST, and any other taxes charged at the border.

DDP puts the most responsibility on the seller of any Incoterm. The buyer simply receives the goods, with nothing extra to pay. That's why DDP is also called duty paid shipping or "landed" delivery.

DDP vs DAP Differences: Side-by-Side Comparison

The two terms are identical up to the border. The split happens at import clearance. Here's how they compare on the points that matter most to an eCommerce seller.

The short version: DAP moves cost and paperwork to the buyer. DDP moves them to you, in exchange for a cleaner buyer experience.

Who Handles Import Clearance and Pays Duties?

This is the core of the DDP vs DAP question, so it's worth looking at what each side actually does.

डीएपी के तहत

When a DAP parcel reaches the destination, customs assesses duties and taxes based on the declared value, the HS code and the country of origin. The buyer, or a customs broker or courier acting for them, must pay before release.

In B2B trade, the buyer usually has a broker and expects this. In B2C eCommerce, the "buyer" is a shopper who may never have imported anything. They often learn about the charge only when the courier sends a payment request or knocks on the door.

डीडीपी के तहत

With DDP, you pay the duties and taxes, either upfront at booking or through your carrier's account. The carrier or its broker clears the parcel using the data you supplied: product description, HS code, value and origin.

Because you're the one paying, accuracy is on you. A wrong HS code in international shipping can mean a higher duty bill, a customs hold or a reassessment after delivery.

How DDP and DAP Affect the Buyer Experience

For a D2C brand, the shopper's experience at delivery matters as much as the product. This is where the two terms feel very different.

Landed-Cost Visibility

Landed cost is the total a buyer pays to get the product home: price, shipping, duties, taxes and fees. Under DDP, the buyer sees that full figure at checkout, because you've built duties into the price or charged them as a line item.

Under DAP, the checkout price is incomplete. The buyer pays the rest later, often with a carrier handling fee on top. Our guide on how to calculate माल उतारने तक की लागत shows how to work out the full figure for each market.

Trust and Repeat Purchases

An unexpected bill at the door feels like a hidden fee, even when it's a government charge. Shoppers rarely blame customs. They blame the brand.

DDP removes that moment. The parcel arrives like a domestic order, which makes it easier to win a second purchase and a good review.

The Impact on Failed Deliveries and RTO

Failed deliveries are where DAP gets expensive for eCommerce sellers. When a buyer won't or can't pay import charges, the parcel goes into a hold, then usually comes back to you or is abandoned.

A refused DAP parcel can cost you:

  • the original international shipping charge;
  • return shipping, or the full value of the goods if they're abandoned or destroyed;
  • storage charges at the destination while the parcel waits;
  • a refund to the buyer and possibly a chargeback;
  • a negative review or marketplace rating.

DDP doesn't remove every cause of failure. Wrong addresses, unreachable buyers and restricted items still cause problems. But it does remove the biggest one specific to international orders: a buyer refusing to pay duties.

If you already deal with returns on domestic orders, our guide to अविभाजित लदान explains the common causes and fixes, many of which also apply abroad.

DDP vs DAP Shipping to the USA, UK and Canada

Each market treats low-value eCommerce parcels differently. These rules change often, so treat the points below as a starting guide and confirm the current position with official sources or your carrier before you ship.

Selling to the USA

The USA used to let most shipments worth $800 or less enter duty-free under its de minimis rule. That exemption has been suspended for all countries since 29 August 2025, and in 2026 US Customs and Border Protection extended the suspension to all modes of import, including postal mail.

For an Indian brand, this means even a small order to a US shopper can attract duties and tariffs. Under DAP, your buyer would pay those charges on arrival, often with a broker fee. That makes DDP the more practical choice for most B2C orders to the USA.

उदाहरण: A Jaipur home decor brand sells a $60 block-print table runner to a buyer in Texas. Under DAP, the buyer may get a duty demand before delivery. Under DDP, the brand pays the duty at booking, prices it into the product or shipping fee, and the buyer gets a clean delivery.

Selling to the UK

The UK has a special rule for low-value parcels. For consignments worth £135 or less sent directly to UK customers, VAT is charged at the point of sale, not at the border. According to GOV.UK guidance on overseas goods sold to UK customers, an overseas seller selling directly must register for UK VAT and account for it. If you sell through an online marketplace, the marketplace is liable for that VAT instead.

For consignments above £135, import VAT is collected at the border, and customs duty may apply too. That's where the DDP vs DAP choice comes back into play.

उदाहरण: A Bengaluru skincare brand sells a £40 gift set direct from its Shopify store. UK VAT is due at checkout, so the brand needs a UK VAT setup either way. A £180 order for a London customer, though, is above the threshold, and under DAP the buyer would pay import VAT and any duty on arrival.

Rules for Northern Ireland differ, so check them separately if you ship there.

Selling to Canada

Canada's thresholds depend on where the goods come from and how they're shipped. Per the कनाडा सीमा सेवा एजेंसी (सीबीएसए), courier shipments from countries other than the USA and Mexico enter duty- and tax-free only up to CAD 20. Above that, duties and taxes apply.

Since that threshold is low, most orders from India to Canada attract GST or HST, plus duty for many product types. Under DAP, the buyer pays these on delivery, usually with a brokerage fee from the courier. That's the exact scenario in our Toronto kurta example.

उदाहरण: A Surat apparel brand ships a CAD 90 dress to Vancouver. Under DDP, the brand calculates duty and tax at booking and builds them into its Canadian prices. The customer pays once, at checkout, and nothing at the door.

For other markets, our list of de minimis values by country shows where low-value parcels enter duty-free.

Pros and Cons of DDP and DAP

Neither term is better in every case. Here's a quick balance sheet.

DAP: Pros and Cons

फ़ायदे

  • Lower upfront cost per shipment for the seller.
  • Less compliance work, since the buyer handles import clearance.
  • Works well for B2B buyers who have their own customs brokers.

नुकसान

  • Surprise charges at delivery hurt the buyer experience.
  • Higher risk of refused parcels, returns and refunds.
  • Harder to compete with local sellers who show one final price.

DDP: Pros and Cons

फ़ायदे

  • Buyers see the full landed cost upfront and pay nothing at the door.
  • Fewer refused deliveries and smoother customs clearance.
  • Builds trust and supports repeat orders in competitive markets.

नुकसान

  • You pay duties and taxes, which affects cash flow and margins.
  • You carry the risk of wrong classification or undervaluation.
  • Some countries need you to register for local taxes, and not every carrier supports DDP on every route.

For a broader take on the older "duties unpaid" term, see our comparison of DDP vs DDU shipping. DDU was replaced by DAP in Incoterms 2010, but many carriers still use the label.

How to Choose Between DDP and DAP

Use these questions to decide which term fits each market and order type.

  1. Who is your buyer? For B2C shoppers, DDP is usually the safer choice. For B2B buyers with their own brokers, DAP often works well and keeps your costs down.
  2. What does the destination charge? Check the duty rate for your HS code, the local VAT or GST, and any de minimis threshold. If most orders attract charges, DDP prevents surprises.
  3. Can your margins absorb duties? Model your landed cost per market. Decide whether to raise prices, add a duty line at checkout, or absorb some of the cost.
  4. Do you need a tax registration? Some countries, like the UK for low-value parcels, need overseas sellers to register and collect tax. Confirm this before you sell there.
  5. Does your carrier support DDP on that lane? DDP availability varies by destination, service and product type. Confirm it before you promise "no duties at delivery" on your website.
  6. How good is your product data? DDP only works if your HS codes, descriptions and values are accurate. Fix your catalogue data first.

A common approach is to use DDP for B2C orders to high-volume markets, and DAP for B2B orders or markets where your carrier doesn't offer duty-paid shipping.

Common Mistakes Sellers Make With DDP and DAP

Small errors here lead to holds, extra charges or unhappy buyers. Watch out for these:

  • Assuming one term works everywhere. Rules, thresholds and carrier support change by country.
  • कम मूल्य घोषित करना to cut duties. It's illegal and risks seizures, penalties and holds.
  • अस्पष्ट उत्पाद विवरण का उपयोग करना like "gift" or "clothing". Customs needs specific descriptions.
  • Not telling DAP buyers about import charges. If you ship DAP, say so clearly at checkout.
  • Writing DDP without naming the place. In B2B contracts, always name the exact destination and the Incoterms edition, such as "DDP Toronto, Incoterms 2020".

निष्कर्ष

The DDP vs DAP shipping choice decides who pays the import bill and who deals with customs at the destination. DAP keeps your costs and paperwork lower, but it pushes surprise charges onto the buyer. DDP costs you more upfront, but buyers get a clean, local-style delivery.

For most Indian D2C brands selling to shoppers in the USA, UK and Canada, duty-paid shipping is the stronger default. Keep DAP for B2B buyers or lanes where DDP isn't offered. Whatever you pick, check the destination's rules and your carrier's capabilities before you ship, and keep your product data accurate.

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

डीडीपी और डीएपी के बीच मुख्य अंतर क्या है?

The main difference is who handles import clearance and pays duties and taxes. Under DAP, the buyer clears customs and pays import charges. Under DDP, the seller does both, so the buyer pays nothing extra on delivery.

Is DDP or DAP better for eCommerce?

DDP is usually better for B2C eCommerce because buyers see the full price at checkout and face no charges at the door. That reduces refused deliveries and returns. DAP can still suit B2B buyers who have their own customs brokers.

Who pays VAT under DAP?

Under DAP, the buyer pays import VAT, GST or sales tax, along with customs duties. Some countries have exceptions for low-value parcels. In the UK, for example, VAT on consignments of £135 or less is charged at the point of sale.

Does DAP include customs clearance?

DAP includes export clearance in the seller's country, but not import clearance. The buyer, or their customs broker, must clear the goods at the destination. Only DDP makes the seller responsible for import clearance.

Is DDU the same as DAP?

Mostly, yes. DDU (Delivered Duty Unpaid) was removed from the Incoterms rules in 2010 and replaced by DAP, which works in a similar way. Many carriers still use "DDU" to mean the buyer pays duties on arrival.
