Dimensional weight, also known as Volumetric weight is the weight of the package based on which the courier company levies the shipping charges on the package. it is calculated as a product of the package’s length, breadth, and height divided by a constant, which is often 5000.
Dimensional weight is the weight of an order in eCommerce in which the dimensions of the package being shipped are taken into account. For example, if a package has length 10 cm, with 10 cm and height 10 cm, then its dimensional weight can be obtained by a product of the length, breadth and height and dividing it by a constant term. For most courier partners, this constant term is 5000.
Dimensional weight is also responsible for the shipping charges charged by a courier company. Usually, a courier company charges for a package based on the higher weight among the true weight of the package and its dimensional weight. Having said that, the kind of packaging you use to ship a product plays a key role in deciding the shipping charges.
